Add a Photo to Your Listing

A photo of your item can help boost bidding. A picture really is worth a thousand words. Follow these three simple steps and you'll be adding photos like a pro.

Step 1: Save a photo to your computer

First, you'll need to save your photos as digital pictures (also called "electronic images"). To get started, choose the type of equipment or service that's best for you.

Digital Camera

  • Digital camera - A digital camera is the easiest and best way to get sharp Web photos. This type of camera is just like a regular camera, except pictures are stored in the camera's memory instead of on film. Don't have a digital camera? See the wide range of digital cameras for sale at eBay. Your digital camera will come with instructions on how to transfer (upload) your photo to your computer.
Scanner
  • Regular camera and scanner - Take a picture with a regular camera and then use a scanner to convert your picture into an electronic image. Or, forgo the camera and use only a scanner if the items are small and lie flat, like stamps or jewelry. Scanners directly transfer pictures to your computer.

Note: If you don't have a scanner, copy centers such as Kinkos or Mail Boxes Etc. can do the scanning for you.

Film-to-Digital
  • Film-to-Digital-Image Service - Digital Image Services such as ofoto.com deliver digital pictures for Web use from a standard roll of film, along with your regular prints.

Now you're ready to move on to Step 2: Edit your photo

Step 2: Edit your photo

At this point you should have your digital picture (electronic file) in your computer.

Now you're ready to edit your photo.

Bad Picture Good Picture

Bad image: Not clear what's for sale, poor lighting

Good image: Subject in focus, good lighting

To edit your image, use the editing software included with your digital camera or scanner. Alternatively, free programs are available from shareware.com or tucows.com. Other editing software packages include Adobe PhotoDeluxe Home Edition or Microsoft Picture It!

Tips

  • Picture file size should be under 50 KB (kilobytes) for quick page downloads.

  • The visual size of your picture should be no larger than a standard photograph (3" by 5" or 4" by 6").

  • Remove unnecessary background.

  • Save your edited picture as a JPEG or JPG file (file types other than JPEG, JPG, or GIF should not be used). Here's how:

    1. Choose Save As from the File menu.

    2. Name your file.

    3. Select JPEG or JPG from the "Save as type" drop-down list.

Note: Selecting JPEG or JPG will automatically end your filename with .jpg (for example, carphoto will now be carphoto.jpg).

You're now ready to move on to Step 3: Include the photo in your item listing!

Step 3: Include the photo in your item listing

When you use the Post an Item form to list a new item for sale (either an auction item or fixed price listing) look for the Photo Upload section. To add your photo, click the Browse button in that section. You will be asked to locate the photo on your computer using the standard file manager. That's it! When you post your item, the photo will be automatically taken from your computer and uploaded to our servers. Each time someone looks at the item they will see your photo.
