Chateau Gruaud-Larose - Vintage - 1945 The 1945 is a remarkably young, backward, massive Gruaud-Larose, similar in style to the 1961, 1975, 1982, and 1986. Still opaque, garnet/black-colored, with a tight but promising nose of licorice, black fruits, and herbs, this full-bodied, meaty, chewy wine exhibits huge reserves of fruit, as well as a spicy, powerful, tannic finish. While it can be drunk now (I would suggest decanting of at least an hour), it is another immortal 1945 that will last for another 20-30 years. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 10/94 Very Top Shoulder. 1 Magnum per lot $1300 - 1700 |

Chateau Haut-Brion - Vintage - 1955 A dark ruby-colored wine with noticeable amber/rust, the 1955 Haut-Brion offers a huge, fragrant bouquet of walnuts, tobacco, wet stones, and smoky, cassis-like fruit. Medium-bodied, with extraordinary elegance and sweetness, this rich, concentrated wine exhibits no hard edges. Remarkably youthful, as well as concentrated and impeccably well-balanced, it is capable of lasting for another 10-20 years. Chateau Latour - Vintage - 1955 ...This bottle exhibited an impressively saturated, dark ruby/purple color with only slight lightening at the edge. The big, rich nose of truffles, black fruits, minerals, and spices displayed full maturity, with no signs of deterioration. The wine remains vibrant, rich, and full-bodied, with considerable tannin, and superb concentration and richness. Made in a powerful, rich, concentrated style, it has 20 more years of aging potential. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 12/93 2 Top Shoulder. 1 Wine Stained Label. 1 Bin Soiled Label. 2 Bottles per lot $850 - 1100 |

Chateau Mouton-Rothschild - Vintage - 1955 The 1955 should be a vintage to buy at auction as I suspect the price is more reasonable than what such acclaimed vintages as 1959 and 1961 fetch. The color reveals no amber or rust, only a slight lightening of intensity at the edge. The nose offers up that explosive Mouton perfume of mint, leather, cassis, black olives, and lead pencil. In the mouth, there is stunning concentration, magnificent extraction of fruit, and plenty of tannin in the long finish. The wine still tastes remarkably young and could easily last another 20-30 years. Amazing! Chateau Lafite-Rothschild - Vintage - 1959 The 1959 is unquestionably the greatest Lafite-Rothschild that has approached full maturity. It remains to be seen whether vintages such as 1982, 1986, and 1990 will reach a similar height. The super-aromatic bouquet of flowers, black truffles, cedar, lead pencil, and red fruits is followed by one of the most powerful and concentrated Lafites I have tasted. Medium to full-bodied, velvety-textured, rich, and pure, it is a testament to what this great estate can achieve when it hits the mark. This youthful wine will last for another 30 or more years. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 10/94 2 Into Neck. 1 Base Neck. 3 Slightly Bin Soiled Labels. 3 Bottles per lot $3300 - 4500 |

Chateau Cos D’Estournel - Vintage - 1961 Typically dark and densely pigmented with no sign of browning at the edge, this big, intense, concentrated, still tannic wine has at least a decade of life left in it. The fragrant bouquet offers up scents of cedar, oriental spices, and fruitcake. It is very rich, deep, and long on the palate, with masses of ripe black fruits. An opulent beauty! Chateau Lafite-Rothschild - Vintage - 1961 ...blends spicy, nutmeglike aromas with abundant fruit flavors and meaty undertones. It is plenty firm and tannic, but not overly so. Chateau Lynch-Bages - Vintage - 1961 Still a spectacular wine, the 1961 defies mortality. It has been at its peak for nearly 15 years, yet it shows no signs of losing its fruit and drying out. The color is a dark garnet with orange/amber at the edge. The profound bouquet has the magnetic allure that leaves great Bordeaux unmatched for complexity. Sweet notes of dried fruits, herbs, tobacco, smoke, and roasted meats are followed by an opulently-textured, thick, nearly viscous wine with high glycerin, ripe, jammy fruit, and an intoxicating combination of glycerin, extract, and suppleness. The wine holds in the glass without cracking up, and has a good 40-45 second finish. There is no telling how much longer this 1961 will retain its magic, but it is still a classic. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 6/00 4 Top Shoulder. 1 Mid Shoulder. 5 Bin Soiled Labels. 5 Bottles per lot $1600 - 2200 |

Chateau Petrus - Vintage - 1964 Deep, dark ruby/garnet-colored, with a hint of orange and rust at the edge, the 1964 Petrus offers a huge, smoky, roasted bouquet of jammy fruit, coffee, and mocha. This huge, massively-endowed wine is packed with alcohol, glycerin, and high tannin. There is stupendous extraction of fruit and amazing length. The only criticism is that it is perhaps too big and robust for its own good. Lucky owners of well-stored bottles are advised to cellar it for a few more years. As they say, it's a tough job, but someone's got to do it! Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 10/94 Very Top Shoulder. Slightly Bin Soiled Label. 1 Bottle per lot $1000 - 1400 |

Chateau Latour - Vintage - 1975 Cream always comes to the top, and so it is with Latour. Given enough time, Latour always seems to emerge as the leader of the Pauillac first-growths. The 1975 appears to be one of the few sure bets among the relatively hard, disappointing 1975 Pauillacs. The color remains a healthy dark ruby, opaque garnet. The nose offers up classic walnut, cedar, minerals, tobacco, and cassis aromas. Although this full-bodied wine is still excruciatingly tannic, I detected plenty of glycerin, extract, and richness, which give me cause for optimism. Nevertheless, it will always be a wine with a firm, tannic edge. Drinkable if decanted several hours in advance, this wine should be cellared until the turn of the century and drunk during the following three decades. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 2/96 6 Very Top Shoulder. 6 Top Shoulder. 2 Slightly Nicked Capsules. 12 Bottles per lot $2000 - 2800 |

Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion - Vintage - 1975 The 1975 La Mission-Haut-Brion has been the most consistent wine of the vintage. Super-concentrated, and now beginning to shed enough tannin so that it can be fully appreciated, this enormously constituted La Mission-Haut-Brion has developed that fabulous Graves set of aromatics - tobacco, black fruits, minerals, roasted herbs, and cedar. Huge, massive, thick, and succulent, with moderate tannin, and some amber notes at the edge, this wine will reach full maturity by the turn of the century and last for 30-40 years. An extraordinary La Mission-Haut-Brion, it comes closest in style to resembling the 1945, with a hint of the sweet, ripe 1959. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 2/96 1 Into Neck. 4 Base Neck. 2 Very Top Shoulder. 1 Top Shoulder. 5 Slightly Bin Soiled Labels. 2 Slightly Corroded Capsules. 8 Bottles per lot $3700 - 5100 |

Chateau Petrus - Vintage - 1975 The 1975 Petrus reveals a youthful, rustic, brutally powerful style, with an opaque garnet/ruby/purple color, and an emerging nose of over-ripe black-cherries, mocha/chocolate, and truffles. Extremely full-bodied, ferociously tannic, but awesomely concentrated, the 1975 Petrus can be drunk, provided readers have a penchant for slightly uncivilized wines. This behemoth Petrus (the last made in this style) is at least a decade away from full maturity. It is potentially a 50 year wine, with exquisite concentration and intensity. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 2/96 1 Base Neck. 6 Very Top Shoulder. 1 Top Shoulder. 1 High Shoulder. 3 Slightly Nicked Labels. 4 Slightly Corroded Capsules. 9 Bottles per lot $7300 - 9800 |

Chateau Latour - Vintage - 1978 Fully mature, this is one of the finest wines of the 1978 vintage. The wine's dark garnet color is followed by a bouquet offering Latour's classic aromas of pepper, herb, minerals, walnuts, and cassis. I also noted a roasted, meaty scent intertwined with the vintage's herbaceousness. Full-bodied and corpulent, this rich, concentrated, soft wine is ideal for drinking over the next 10 years. Chateau Cos D’Estournel - Vintage - 1982 This estate tends to make a more elegant style of Bordeaux, but the 1982 is atypically thick, super-concentrated, rich, and powerful. Although approachable and even delicious if decanted an hour or more before serving, the wine reveals no signs of age in its opaque dark ruby/purple color. The tannin is more aggressive, but the wine still reveals that fabulous inner-core of sweet, jammy, blackcurrant and black-cherry fruit. There is considerable glycerin and body in this still youthful but immensely promising example of Cos d'Estournel. It has at least 20 years of life remaining . Chateau Comtesse De Lalande Pichon-Longueville - Vintage - 1982 This has been the most sumptuous, delicious, and profound 1982 to drink over the last 5-6 years. It has never gone through any kind of dormant stage, and it continues to be the odds on favorite to emerge first in any blind tasting of the top 1982s. It reveals a classic Pauillac aromatic profile of sweet blackcurrant fruit intermingled with scents of herbs, cedar, and toast. However, on the palate it performs more like a great Pomerol. Given its unctuous texture, and lavish quantities of fruit, glycerin, and alcohol, this is a thick, supple, velvety-textured, gloriously decadent and hedonistic Pichon-Lalande that should continue to drink well for another 10-12 years. If readers need just one wine with which to impress someone, close a deal, or just experience the pleasures of wine, make it the 1982 Pichon-Lalande. Chateau Palmer - Vintage - 1989 Palmer's 1989 is one of the vintage's great successes. The wine exhibits a dark ruby/purple color, a sweet, jammy nose of black fruits, intermingled with floral scents, licorice, and a touch of truffles. Full-bodied and supple, with low acidity, copious quantities of ripe fruit and glycerin, and a medium to full-bodied, concentrated, harmonious, seamless texture, this is a gorgeous Palmer. It may turn out similar to this estate's brilliant 1962 and 1953. Although approachable, it will improve for another decade, and last for 20-25 years. Chateau Grand-Mayne - Vintage - 2000 ...it appears Grand Mayne is more and more becoming the Lynch Bages of St.-Emilion. The corpulent, fleshy, hedonistic 2000 is loaded with concentrated black fruits infused with vanilla and espresso notes. Large-scaled and delicious, it is an attention-getter, but not overdone. The oak is beautifully integrated, the acidity low, and the tannin sizeable but ripe. A blockbuster effort, this admirably pure and balanced wine will be at its finest between 2005-2018. Chateau Haut-Bergey - Vintage - 2000 A stunning achievement from this unheralded vineyard, the saturated ruby/purple-colored 2000 displays a striking perfume of cigar smoke, scorched earth, roasted espresso, and intense black cherry/currant fruit. It possesses luxurious richness, medium to full body, sweet tannin, and a seamless, silky-textured finish that lasts for nearly 45 seconds. This brilliant achievement satisfies both the hedonistic and intellectual senses. Moreover, it is a good value, and surprisingly accessible in spite of its density. A bottle kept open for 5 days never revealed any oxidation ... always a good barometer of a wine's aging potential. Chateau L' Hermitage - Vintage - 2000 Made from a vineyard situated near Angelus and Beau-Sejour-Becot, this 600-case blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc is fashioned from low yields and is put through a pre-fermentation cold maceration. The rich, pure, concentrated, opaque purple-colored 2000 displays all the hallmarks of this great vintage - power, intensity, depth, ripeness, and moderately high tannin. Dense and impressive, it will be drinkable between 2004-2015. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 2/02 Original Wooden Case. 12 Bottles per lot $400 - 550 |

Chateau Pontet-Canet - Vintage - 2000 The impressively saturated opaque purple color offers up some promising aromas of black currants, vanilla, truffle, smoke, and mineral. In the mouth, it is full-bodied, powerful, layered, and enticingly textured, but oh, so backward and firm. The finish is long, but this broodingly backward, large-scaled Pontet-Canet will require considerable patience. Chateau Quinault L'Enclos - Vintage - 2000 Only the fourth vintage for proprietors Francoise and Alain Raynaud, this wine comes from an old vineyard (the vines are among the oldest in St.-Emilion) within the city of Libourne. A cutting edge vinification with cold maceration and aging sur lie, stirring of lees, and an obvious respect for the terroir and the goal of capturing the essence of a vineyard have all been lofty goals of the Raynauds. The powerful, multi-layered 2000 should rival 1998 as the finest Quinault produced. It boasts an opaque purple color as well as a gorgeous concoction of crushed blackberries, blueberries, and black currants intermixed with violets, licorice, and subtle smoky oak. It cuts a broad swath across the palate with an expansive chewiness in addition to terrific concentration, purity, and overall equilibrium. In spite of that, it is remarkably light on its feet. Chateau Smith-Haut-Lafitte - Vintage - 2000 A sensational effort, and undeniably the finest wine to ever emerge from this estate, the opaque purple-colored 2000 offers scents of tobacco, camphor, graphite, creme de cassis, and licorice. This full-bodied, concentrated effort possesses low acidity, a multi-layered texture, tremendous intensity of flavor, and a persistent finish with considerable ripe, well-integrated tannin. This is a brilliant example of equilibrium and finesse allied to considerable power and flavor. Kudos to the Cathiards. This is top-flight, classified growth-quality stuff. So what's new? This continues to be an over-achieving estate! It will be long-lived. Chateau Yon-Figeac - Vintage - 2000 A super value, this deep ruby/purple-colored St.-Emilion offers aromas and flavors not too dissimilar from a top vintage of the famed L'Evangile. Sweet blackberry and wild mountain berry fruit is interwoven with hints of raisins, plums, and white flowers. Medium-bodied and fleshy, with excellent purity and sweet fruit, this is undoubtedly a sleeper of the vintage. As the wine sits in the glass, more black raspberries seem to emerge. Shafer Vineyards - Vintage - 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select Aged 32 months in 100% new French oak prior to bottling, it is one of the world’s greatest Cabernet Sauvignons. Like many of the top wines of the vintage, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select has closed down, but it reveals impressive potential. Its dense purple color is accompanied by an exquisite bouquet of charcoal, sweet oak, black currant liqueur, and graphite. Full-bodied and powerful, with superb intensity, length, persistence, purity, and texture, it should either be decanted for several hours in advance, or given another 2-4 years of bottle age. Sine Qua Non - Vintage - 2002 Syrah Just For The Love Of It A dead-ringer (at least aromatically) for Guigal’s single vineyard Cote Rotie La Mouline, the 2002 Just For The Love of It is the greatest California Syrah I have yet tasted. A one-thousand case blend of 96% Syrah, 2% Grenache, and 2% Viognier, it is nearly equal parts Alban, Bien Nacido, and Stolpman fruit with a small amount from both Shadow Canyon and White Hawk. It boasts a provocative perfume of creme de cassis, toast, blackberries, licorice, barbecue spice, and exotic floral scents. Extremely full-bodied, with fabulous intensity, great purity, awesome length, and a finish that lasts over a minute, this classic is a must purchase. Chateau Latour-A-Pomerol - Vintage - 1961 Although the 1947 Cheval Blanc is widely considered to be the wine of the century among collectors, the 1961 Latour a Pomerol also merits a share of the title. Giving points to a wine such as this makes one think of Shakespeare's reflection that comparisons are odious. To put it mildly, this wine is off the charts. If I had only one Bordeaux to drink, the 1961 Latour a Pomerol would have to be at the top of my list. Given its phenomenal richness and amazing precision and balance, it can bring tears to one's eyes. Still a saturated dark purple color with no signs of amber, orange, or rust, the nose offers extraordinarily rich, intense aromas of jammy plums, blackcurrants, licorice, and truffles. Port-like, with remarkable viscosity and thickness, as well as a finish that lasts for more than a minute, this wine is in a class by itself. Even greater than the 1961 Petrus and 1961 Latour (two perfect wines), it is phenomenal. Given its youthfulness (it is the least evolved wine of the vintage), it hahas the potential to last for another 20-30 years. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 10/94 Very Top Shoulder. Bin Soiled And Slightly Bin Stained Label. Slightly Nicked Capsule. 1 Bottle per lot $5400 - 7200

Clos Des Papes - Vintage - 2000 Chateauneuf-Du-Pape The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape reveals 14.6% alcohol, and is stylistically similar to the great 1990. The 2000 is open-knit and fat, with higher levels of glycerin as well as a more corpulent style than the structured, backward 2001. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by sweet, black cherry/kirsch liqueur-like notes presented in a voluptuous, full-throttle, intense style. It is already revealing such secondary nuances as pepper, garrigue, and truffles. Chewy, full-bodied, and moderately tannic, this cuvee is accessible, but not ready to drink. La Fiorita Lamborghini - Vintage - 2001 Campoleone It’s hard to avoid slipping into automotive metaphors when talking about the 2001 Campoleone, made at the Lamborghini family estate near Lake Trasimeno – sleek lines, power to spare, super acceleration from start to finish, a shift into overdrive on the finish. Suffice it to say that this is Umbria’s prototypical Sangiovese/Merlot blend, an intense dark ruby with a potent, spicy, red currant, raspberry, and plum nose, a sumptuous texture with superior volume, velvet, and sweetness, and exceptional length, grip, and sensuality on the close. Romeo - Vintage - 2002 La Cueva Del Contador ...a 100% Tempranillo bottled unfiltered after spending time in French oak. Dense ruby/purple-hued, with a fragrant bouquet of roasted espresso, melted chocolate, scorched earth, and dense black currant and cherry fruit, it is reminiscent of some of the great efforts from Peter Sisseck’s Pingus. Opulent and full-bodied with an unctuous texture, sweet tannin, and low acidity, this beauty is clearly made in the more modern style of Rioja winemaking. Kaesler - Vintage - 2002 Shiraz Stone Horse The 2002 Shiraz Stonehorse is spectacular. It is indicative of just how special this vintage is in the Barossa. It is a teeth-staining, mouth-filling, extremely concentrated Shiraz displaying a level of quality that makes the 2002 Bogan and 2002 Old Bastard’s potential quality level look scary. The inky purple-colored Stonehorse offers a great perfume, beautifully integrated wood, and sensational richness as well as length. A prodigious effort that easily conceals its 15.5% alcohol, it should drink well for 10-15 years. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 8/03 6 Into Neck. 6 Bottles per lot $175 - 250 |

Shafer Vineyards - Vintage - 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select The 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is one of the finest wines of the vintage. The 14.9% alcohol is barely noticeable given the amazing concentration and intensity. A saturated opaque purple color is followed by scents of vanilla, blackberry liqueur, crushed minerals, and a hint of white flowers. There is stunning intensity, tremendous purity, full body, and a remarkable, seamless finish (amazing given the elevated, austere tannin). Give the 1999 another 2-3 years of cellaring, and enjoy it over the following two decades or longer. A brilliant effort! Domaine De La Romanee-Conti - Vintage - 1969 La Tache A healthy, medium to dark garnet color with considerable rust and brown at the edge is typical of a 26-year old, high class red Burgundy. A pungent, smoked duck, Asian spice, sweet, red and black fruit, caramel-like bouquet explodes from the glass. If there is ever a wine that can be said to reek of terroir, it is this 1969. From one of the more structured vintages in the last 25 years..., this fully mature, medium to full-bodied La Tache still retains some tannin. It is beautifully sweet, expansive, and rich, with complex aromatics... It is a terrific La Tache that proves that in some instances, great red Burgundy can last for 25+ years. Chateau Petrus - Vintage - 1973 In the first issue of THE WINE ADVOCATE (which was sent free of charge since no one had any interest in a publication by someone named Robert Parker), this was one of my top picks in what was otherwise a critical look at the diluted 1973 vintage. I ended up buying a half case of the 1973 Petrus (for $15 a bottle!). The wine was so delicious, as well as surprisingly concentrated for a 1973, that I drank all of it in its first decade of life. In a recent blind tasting, this magnum still revealed the wine's marvelous fruit and precociousness. Although it does not possess the power and richness of a great vintage, it is an outstanding Petrus. It offers a surprisingly intense, spicy, sweet, mocha, and black-cherry-scented nose, medium to full body, admirable fruit and purity, and a long, lush, super-soft finish displaying a trace of herbs and tea. This generously-endowed, velvety-textured wine has been fully mature for nearly two decades, yet it exhibits no signs of decline - rather amazing! Chateau L' Angelus - Vintage - 2000 The finest effort since the 1989 and 1990, this dense purple-colored wine has an extravagantly ripe, concentrated style. The 2000 (in a new engraved bottle) offers up aromas of blackberry liqueur and vintage port. As the wine sits in the glass, graphite, wet stones, smoke, barbecue spices, and olives also make an appearance. It unfolds on the palate in layers, is full-bodied, big and rich yet incredibly poised, well-balanced, and pure. Quite backward, this is one of the greatest Angelus made to date. Chateau Ausone - Vintage - 2000 Proprietor Alain Vauthier has produced a prodigious wine that captures the essence of Ausone's terroir. A saturated black/purple color is followed by sensational aromas of ink, cherries, blackberries, blueberries, and that wet stones/liquid minerality characteristic. The wine has phenomenal presence on the palate as well as astonishing richness and purity. Despite its extract, power, and richness, it is remarkably light, with a surreal delicacy. It is a tour de force in winemaking and a compelling expression of this magical terroir. It should prove to be legendary, but sadly, anyone over the age of 50 will probably not live to see it come close to maturity. Chateau Cheval Blanc - Vintage - 2000 This closed, backward blend of 53% Merlot and 47% Cabernet Franc boasts a saturated purple color along with a reticent but striking bouquet of blackberries, blueberries, truffles, and mocha. In spite of its tightness, aeration reveals scents of licorice, menthol, and saddle leather. Opulent and full-bodied, with low acidity, sweet tannin, and a 60-second finish, it is unquestionably as profound as the 1990 and 1982. I still believe the 2000 has the potential to be the most compelling Cheval Blanc since the mythical 1947 and 1949, but patience is required. It should merit a three digit score in 7-10 years, but it is closed at present. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 4/03 Original Wooden Case. 12 Bottles per lot $7000 - 8000 |

Chateau La Conseillante - Vintage - 2000 A tremendous effort, and certainly the best La Conseillante since the marvelous duo of 1989 and 1990, this deep ruby/plum/purple-colored wine offers up notes of blackberries and kirsch liqueur intermixed with licorice, incense, spice box, and copious amounts of toasty oak. It is a relatively powerful effort for La Conseillante, with more tannin and structure than most vintages possess. As the wine sits in the glass, black raspberries, blueberries, smoke along with floral notes emerge. There is tremendous purity, medium to full body, great precision and concentration. Unlike most vintages of La Conseillante, the 2000 will require patience. A bottle kept open refused to oxidize until day six! Ever since manager Charles Chevalier was transferred from his beloved Sauternes property of Rieussec (also owned by the Rothschilds) to Lafite in 1994, there has been a succession of profound wines to emerge from this noble estate. The 2000 Lafite Rothschild, a blend of 93.3% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6.7% Merlot (only 36% of the crop made the grade) has an opaque ruby/purple color, followed by an extraordinary aromatic expression of liquid minerals/stones interwoven with the tell-tale graphite notes, mulberry, black currants, caramel, and tobacco. In the mouth, it is remarkably light on its feet, but somehow seems to pack intense flavors into layer upon layer of fruit and richness that cascade over the palate. A compelling wine, with extraordinary precision, great intensity, and a seamlessness in spite of what are obviously elevated levels of tannin, this wine was provocatively open and beautiful when tasted in January and February, but I am sure it will soon close down. The finish lasted a whopping 72 seconds! This is utterly fascinating stuff. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 4/03 Original Wooden Case. 12 Bottles per lot $5500 - 6000 |

Chateau Latour - Vintage - 2000 Truly great stuff, it reveals perfect equilibrium, great finesse, yet colossal size, with a thickness and density that rival the brilliant 1996. This saturated black ruby/purple colored wine seems almost discreet on first inspection, but with aeration, notes of vanilla, exceptionally pure, mineral-infused creme de cassis, and earth emerge. Full-bodied and tannic, it should come close to representing perfection. Latour's 2000 is hard to compare with previous vintages. It obviously does not have the opulence of the 1990 and 1982, yet there is an extraordinary purity, delineation, seamlessness, and freshness to this wine that sets it apart from previous vintages. In any event, it is prodigious, with at least five decades of evolution ahead of it. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 4/03 Original Wooden Case. 12 Bottles per lot $5500 - 6000 |

Chateau Leoville-Las Cases - Vintage - 2000 This wine has put on weight and, as impressive as it was from cask, it is even more brilliant from bottle. Only 35% of the crop made it into the 2000 Leoville Las Cases, a blend of 76.8% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.4% Merlot, and 8.8% Cabernet Franc. The wine is truly profound, with an opaque purple color and a tight but promising nose of vanilla, sweet cherry liqueur, black currants, and licorice in a dense, full-bodied, almost painfully rich, intense style with no hard edges. This seamless classic builds in the mouth, with a finish that lasts over 60 seconds. Still primary, yet extraordinarily pure, this compelling wine, which continues to build flavor intensity and exhibit additional layers of texture, is a tour de force in winemaking and certainly one of the great Leoville Las Cases. In another sense, it symbolizes / pays homage to proprietor Michel Delon, who passed away in 2000. Michel has been succeeded by his son, Jean-Hubert, another perfectionist. Chateau Leoville-Las Cases - Vintage - 2000 Clos Du Marquis One of the great sleepers of the vintage and probably the best Clos de Marquis I have ever tasted, this wine could easily compete with many of the vintage's classified growths. Dense, opaque purple-colored, with creme de cassis, vanilla, and cherry notes, medium to full body, an unctuous texture, low acidity, and a more evolved style than its bigger sibling, Leoville Las Cases, this dense, chewy, remarkably concentrated and stylish wine should be at its best between 2005 and 2018. Chateau Lynch-Bages - Vintage - 2000 The 2000 Lynch-Bages exhibits a dense purple color, loads of glycerin and extract, big, muscular, sweet creme de cassis notes, with hints of new saddle leather, earth, and tobacco leaf. The 2000 is forceful yet plush, with a thick, juicy, succulent mid-palate, ripe tannin, and a long, layered finish. I know it will be tempting to pull corks on this wine in its youth, but it really will not hit its stride for 7-10 years and will last for at least 25. Chateau Margaux - Vintage - 2000 ...the 2000 has turned out to be a colossal example of Chateau Margaux that is tasting even better from bottle than it was from cask. Only 40% of the crop made it into this 2000 Margaux, a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. Stylistically, it is somewhat of a hybrid between the succulent, opulent, fleshy 1990, and the more delineated, structured, cooler climate-tasting 1996. The 2000 possesses a saturated ruby/purple color to the rim as well as an extraordinarily promising nose of creme de cassis intermixed with white flowers, licorice, and hints of espresso and toasty oak. There is great intensity, compelling purity, a multi-layered, full-bodied palate, and a finish that goes on for nearly 70+ seconds. Bottled naturally, with no filtration, it is a monumental example of the elegance and power that symbolize this extraordinary vineyard. A tour de force in winemaking, many of my colleagues predicted, far earlier than me, that it would be the wine of the vintage. It is certainly one of the wines of the vintage, but there is plenty of competition, even at this lofty level of quality. Absolutely awesome! Chateau Monbousquet - Vintage - 2000 From an unheralded terroir, this Monbousquet was made from extremely low yields of 28-30 hectoliters per hectare. Aged sur lie and bottled unfined and unfiltered, it exemplifies proprietor Perse's enormous efforts. Black and blue to the rim, this wine represents the essence of this terroir. Its saturated black/purple color is accompanied by extraordinary aromatics of sweet blackberries, chocolate, coffee, incense, new saddle leather, and vanilla. Remarkable intensity, lively acidity, and abundant tannin provide definition and grip. This is the most intense, muscular, and biggest Monbousquet made to date, and that is saying something considering the 1998 and 1999! So be prepared, it is remarkable wine. Chateau Mouton-Rothschild - Vintage - 2000 The 2000 Mouton Rothschild is at its best with about 24-48 hours of decanting. A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot, the wine offers a saturated ruby/purple color in addition to reticent but promising aromas of toast, coffee, licorice, creme de cassis, and roasted nuts. Dense, chewy, and backward, with tremendous purity and density in addition to obvious toasty oak, it is full-bodied, powerful, tannic, and backward. Twenty-four to 48 hours of aeration only hints at its ultimate potential. This blockbuster will be exceptionally long-lived. Chateau Palmer - Vintage - 2000 This has turned out to be a prodigious Palmer. The saturated purple color offers up sexy, full-bodied, almost masculine notes of roasted meats, blackberries, and creme de cassis intermixed with notions of toast, smoke, and camphor. Only 50% of the production made it into the 2000, a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon and 47% Merlot. The wine is opulent, rich, and full-bodied, with tannin that has become sweeter with age. Its best showing yet, most importantly, has been from bottle. This is a great Palmer that should rival the best of recent vintages, which have all been stunning, as this estate continues to go from strength to strength. Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron - Vintage - 2000 A spectacular effort, this is a profound Pichon Baron and clearly my favorite vintage of this wine since the 1989 and 1990. The wine is full-bodied, tremendously concentrated, with sweet tannin and a seamless finish that goes on for close to one minute. Chateau Calon-Segur - Vintage - 2001 I suspect this 2001 will shut down (as most young Calon-Segurs do), although it appears more forward and evolved than the huge, backward, but totally dormant 2000. The plum/ruby-colored 2001 reveals aromas of damp earth, cranberries, cherries, herbs, and forest floor. While lighter than its older sibling, it is medium-bodied, elegant, and should emerge from its post-bottling sleep in 4-5 years, and drink well for 14-15. Chateau Cheval Blanc - Vintage - 2001 I was surprised by how soft, opulent, even voluptuous the 2001 Cheval Blanc performed out of bottle as this estate’s wines tend to shut down when young. Its deep ruby/purple color was accompanied by sweet aromas of cranberries, black currants, menthol, Asian spices, and underbrush. This seductive blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc reveals a lush sweetness, medium body, and ripe, well-integrated tannin. A racy effort filled with personality, it should be at its finest between 2007-2018. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 6/04 Original Wooden Case. 12 Bottles per lot $2400 - 2800 |

Chateau Haut-Brion - Vintage - 2001 Haut-Brion’s 2001, which was bottled late (the end of September, 2003), possesses an unmistakable nobility as well as a burgeoning complexity. Plum/purple to the rim, this blend of 52% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 12% Cabernet Franc is playing it close to the vest, having closed down considerably after bottling. Nevertheless, it reveals pure notes of sweet and sour cherries, black currants, licorice, smoke, and crushed stones. Medium-bodied with excellent purity, firm tannin, and an angular, structured finish, it requires 5-7 years of cellaring. Chateau Lafite-Rothschild - Vintage - 2001 The 2001 Lafite Rothschild’s deep, saturated plum/purple color is accompanied by lead pencil liqueur-like notes intermixed with sweet red and black currants, plums, and cedar. This blend of 86.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13.5% Merlot is a classic example of Lafite. Extremely elegant, medium-bodied, with intense concentration, richness, and sweet tannin, it appears to be on a rapid evolutionary track, at least in comparison to recent Lafite vintages that have been far more backward and powerful. The classy 2001 should be at its finest between 2007-2020. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 6/04 Original Wooden Case. 12 Bottles per lot $1500 - 2000 |

A blend of 55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petit Verdot, it spent 18 months in cask (4 on its lees), and was bottled unfiltered. A dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by ripe aromas of spring flowers, blueberries, blackberries, and cassis. Medium-bodied, stylish, and elegant, with sweet tannin, impressive concentration, tremendous persistence as well as flavor intensity, and a 40+ second finish, this noble claret should be at its finest between 2005-2016. Chateau Leoville-Barton - Vintage - 2001 Consistent from bottle (I tasted it three times), this is an outstanding offering, although not quite at the prodigious level of the 2000. Civilized and approachable for a young Leoville-Barton, it exhibits a saturated plum/purple color along with classic Bordelais aromas of damp earth, creme de cassis, smoke, vanillin, and tobacco. Medium to full-bodied and rich, with high but well-integrated tannin, and a long, 40+ second finish, it should turn out to be a brilliant effort, and one of the stars of the Medoc. Chateau Pavie - Vintage - 2001 One of the candidates for wine of the vintage ... again, the 2001 Pavie, from a magnificent south-facing vineyard planted primarily on limestone soil, is a blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. After a six week maceration, it spent nearly 24 months in new oak prior to being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Some Bordeaux brokers think it might be even better than the 2000 Pavie, but I do not agree. The inky/ruby/purple-colored 2001 exhibits a tight but promising nose of crushed stones, a liqueur of blackberries, cherries, and black currants, and subtle smoke and licorice in the background. Powerful, with impressive elegance, fine harmony among its elements, a multi-layered texture, it has a finish that lasts for 50+ seconds. There is considerable tannin, but it is well-integrated. Give it 3-4 years, and drink it over the next two decades. A profound effort for the vintage, it is an example of a perfectionist proprietor pushing the envelope of quality. Chateau Lafite-Rothschild - Vintage - 1984 The personality of Lafite comes through in the 1984 vintage. An elegant bouquet of herbaceous, cedary fruit is first class. New oak dominates the palate and some hard tannins exhibit a dryness at the finish. The 1984 is a light but well-balanced wine. Chateau Lafite-Rothschild - Vintage - 1993 successful wine for Lafite, this dark ruby/purple-colored 1993 is tightly-wound, medium-bodied, with a closed set of aromatics that reluctantly reveal hints of sweet blackcurrant fruit, weedy tobacco, and lead pencil scents. Polished and elegant, with Lafite's noble restraint, this is an excellent, classy, slightly austere wine. Ruffino - Vintage - 1993 Chianti Classico Riserva Ducale The 1993 Chianti Classico Riserva Ducale Gold Label reveals lots of aromatics, as well as sweet, ripe fruit without a high level of astringent tannin. A complex nose of smoke, dried herbs, sour cherries, grilled meats, and herbs is enticing. Rich, with medium to full body, good acidity, and sweet tannin, it is close to full maturity, and should last for 10-12 years. Caymus - Vintage - 1990 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection The wine offers a saturated, dark purple color, and a rich, spicy, oaky nose backed up by generous quantities of jammy blackcurrants. Ripe, highly extracted, and full-bodied, with copious amounts of sweet tannin and layers of fruit, this is a knock-out, flamboyantly-styled Cabernet for drinking over the next 15 or more years. The Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, which spends significant time in oak, can be one of California's most riveting wines... Opus One - Vintage - 1991 Opus One's 1991 is a gorgeously rich, opaque ruby/purple-colored wine with a knock-out nose of smoke, cassis, vanilla, and a whiff of herbs and licorice. Full-bodied, with surprisingly supple, concentrated, chocolatey, cassis, and blackcurrant flavors that ooze across the palate, this voluptuously-textured example of Opus One is atypical in a vintage that produced so many backward wines. There is no question the wine possesses plenty of tannin, but it is admirably concealed by the copious quantities of concentrated fruit. This Opus can be drunk now as well as over the next 15+ years. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 2/95 Original Wooden Case. 6 Base Neck. 6 Bottles per lot $850 - 1200 |

Beringer - Vintage - 1992 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve The opaque-colored 1992 exhibits a huge, chocolatey, smoky nose crammed with gobs of black fruits, This soft, voluptuously-textured, full-bodied wine boasts remarkable concentration and purity. It is a round, flattering, luscious style of Cabernet Sauvignon that will be hard to resist when young. It should keep for 15+ years. Beringer has once again proven that they are one of the qualitative leaders in California as they continue to turn out reference point wines - not only for California, but the world. Chateau Valandraud - Vintage - 1995 This splendid Valandraud ranks with the finest wines proprietor Jean-Luc Thunevin has produced since his debut 1991 vintage. The wine exhibits an opaque purple color, and a sensational nose of roasted herbs, black fruits (cherries, currants, and blackberries), and high class toasty oak (the latter component is more of a nuance than a dominant characteristic). Very concentrated, with layers of fruit, glycerin, and extract, yet seamlessly constructed, this wine contains the stuff of greatness, and appears to be the finest Valandraud yet produced. The finish lasts for over 30 seconds. The wine's high tannin is barely noticeable because of the ripeness and richness of fruit. Paul Jaboulet Aine - Vintage - 1996 Hermitage La Chapelle The 1996 Hermitage La Chapelle is immensely impressive. The acidity is high. The color is black/purple, and the wine is extremely concentrated, but unevolved and impossible to penetrate. It is a massive effort with extraordinary concentration, but the high acidity requires a minimum of 10 years of cellaring. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 12/03 3 Bottles per lot $450 - 600 |

Already accessible, it will drink well for 10-15 years. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 8/04 3 Bottles per lot $750 - 1000 |

Chateau D' Yquem - Vintage - 1975 The 1975 may turn out to be the greatest of the modern-day Yquems. When fully mature in another 25-30 years, it may rival the extraordinary 1937 and 1921. This wine continues to evolve at a stubbornly slow pace. It is far more backward than recent vintages such as 1983 and 1986. Nevertheless, it is awesomely concentrated, has perfect balance, and displays the telltale Yquem aromas of vanillin oak, tropical fruit, pineapples, honeyed peaches, and grilled almonds. There is exceptionally crisp acidity that pulls all of the massive extract into precise focus. This is a wine of astonishing power and finesse, with a finish that must be tasted to be believed. It is a monumental effort that may well justify a perfect score in another decade.
