2 Chateau Lascombes - Vintage - 1966
The 1966 is a top-notch effort from Lascombes. This wine is better than the 1970, certainly more complete and charming than the 1975, and has proven longer lived than either the 1982 or 1983 will be--I think. It is dark ruby with an amber edge, possessing very good richness and length to go along with its voluptuous, seductive bouquet. It has been fully mature for over a decade, but continues to exhibit high class. It is one of my favorite 1966s. Robert Parker, Bordeaux, 3rd Edition, 1/98

7 Chateau Lascombes - Vintage - 1970
The fully mature 1970 is a fine example of Lascombes--darkly colored, ripe, full bodied, richly fruity, and fleshy, but it has the concentration of fruit and structure to hold for 4-6 more years. It is a spicy, fragrant, and altogether satisfying mouthful of amply endowed wine. Robert Parker, Bordeaux 3rd Edition, 98

9 Chateau Petrus - Vintage - 1970
The 1970 Petrus has developed magnificently over the last 4-5 years. Tight and reserved early in life, it has blossomed into a true blockbuster. This massive, highly-extracted, full-bodied, jammy, thick, unctuously-textured wine possesses a huge, spice, tobacco, black-cherry, mocha-scented nose. It is a real turn-on. The wine is fully mature, but it has at least 20 years of life remaining. A spectacular Petrus, it is now superior to the 1971, which out-performed it for nearly two decades. Owners of this wine have a true nectar in their cellars. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 6/96

15 Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou - Vintage - 1978
One of the stars of the vintage, the 1978 Ducru-Beaucaillou has reached its plateau of maturity. It offers a deep ruby color with only a touch of amber at the edge, and a bouquet of complex aromas of truffles, cassis, licorice, and minerals. Medium to full-bodied, with excellent concentration, soft tannins, and a nicely layered feel, this wine reveals vague hints of the weedy herbaceousness that has come to dominate so many of this vintage's wines. 22 Chateau D' Yquem - Vintage - 1975
The 1975 may turn out to be the greatest of the modern-day Yquems. When fully mature in another 25-30 years, it may rival the extraordinary 1937 and 1921. This wine continues to evolve at a stubbornly slow pace. It is far more backward than recent vintages such as 1983 and 1986. Nevertheless, it is awesomely concentrated, has perfect balance, and displays the telltale Yquem aromas of vanillin oak, tropical fruit, pineapples, honeyed peaches, and grilled almonds. There is exceptionally crisp acidity that pulls all of the massive extract into precise focus. This is a wine of astonishing power and finesse, with a finish that must be tasted to be believed. It is a monumental effort that may well justify a perfect score in another decade. Robert Parker, Bordeaux, 3rd Edition, 98

This wine displays an explosive nose of smoked meats, tea, herbs, and black fruits. In the mouth, it is rich and graceful, full of ripeness, with fresh acidity, and soft tannins in the finish. Fully mature for over a decade, it exhibits no signs of losing its fruit or zestiness. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 4/92

The hugely impressive 1995 Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs displays ripe apple and pear scents. Broad, rich, deep, and medium to full-bodied, this dense (yet admirable balanced), powerful wine is packed with concentrated layers of white fruits, flowers, and toast. Notes of tangy green apples appear in its awesomely long finish to reinvigorate the palate. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 12/05

Crisp, fresh, and backward, it is another brilliant example from the exquisite 1996 vintage. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 12/05

31 Chateau De Suduiraut - Vintage - 2001
A prodigious effort, possibly the finest Suduiraut since 1959, the medium gold-colored 2001 offers notes of creme brulee, caramelized citrus, Grand Marnier, honeysuckle, and other exotic fruits as well as a pleasant touch of oak. With terrific acidity, a voluptuous/unctuous palate, and sweet, powerful flavors buttressed by crisp acidity, it is a phenomenal Sauternes. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 6/04

33 Domaine Du Pegau - Vintage - 1998
Chateauneuf-Du-Pape Cuvee Laurence
The 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Laurence, the finest example of this offering I have yet tasted (even better than the 1989, 1990, and 1995), spent four years in small barrels prior to being bottled unfiltered. A spectacular effort, it is a monument to great Chateauneuf du Pape. A dense plum/purple color is followed by aromas of sweet black fruits intermixed with tobacco, cedar, pepper, and fruitcake. Powerful, rich, and concentrated, with a finish that lasts for nearly a minute, this wine is performing far better than when I tasted it a year ago. It is a legendary Chateauneuf du Pape in the making. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025. This is one of the benchmarks for traditionally-made Chateauneuf du Pape. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 2/03

34 Chateau Beaucastel - Vintage - 1999
Chateauneuf-Du-Pape
The prodigious 1999 Beaucastel boasts aromas of blackberry fruit intermixed with cassis, licorice, roasted meats, leather, and truffles. While it does not possess much fat or precociousness, it displays definition and elegance. This is a full-bodied, concentrated, classic Beaucastel. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 12/01

35 Domaine De La Charbonniere - Vintage - 2001
Chateauneuf-Du-Pape Vieilles Vignes
The 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes is a wine of precision, finesse, and elegance as opposed to pure power and intensity. Made from 80-year old Grenache (95% of the blend, with 5% Mourvedre), it emerges from a rock-strewn sector called Le Crau. Ninety percent is aged in neutral wood foudres and 10% in small casks. Like all the Charbonniere offerings, it is bottled unfiltered. Aromas of sweet and sour cherries, strawberries, pepper, spice box, and lavender are accompanied by a medium to full-bodied, elegant, pure wine with tremendous symmetry and balance. As I said last year, if the sexy, delicate French actress Sophie Marceau were a Chateauneuf du Pape, this would be it. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 2/04

36 Domaine Du Pegau - Vintage - 2001
Chateauneuf-Du-Pape Cuvee Laurence
Mature, with lots of prune, bittersweet cocoa, coffee, brick and tar flavors. The finish is long and slightly rugged, but has the depth and acidity to keep this going for a while longer. Shows clove and hoisin sauce notes as it airs in the glass. In the Bonneau mold. Wine Spectator, 07

37 Chateau De St Cosme - Vintage - 2001
Gigondas Valbelle Reserve
The luxury offering, the 2001 Gigondas Valbelle (offered only in the best years), is a blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah aged in equal parts new and 1-year old oak casks. This blockbuster boasts an inky/purple color along with a big, sweet nose of wood smoke, melted licorice, plums, kirsch liqueur, blackberries, and blueberries. The complex aromas are followed by a full-bodied, ripe, textured, impeccably pure, well-balanced wine with elevated tannin, suggesting 2-3 years of cellaring will be beneficial. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 2/04
Original Carton. 10- .5cm. 2- .6cm.

38 Pierre Usseglio - Vintage - 2001
Chateauneuf-Du-Pape
The brilliant 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape should not be overlooked (the 1998 and 2000 are drinking spectacularly well at present). A peppery, leathery, earthy effort with copious quantities of black cherries, this dense, full-bodied 2001 is surprisingly precocious by Usseglio’s standards. Nevertheless, 1-2 years of cellaring is warranted given the size and structure of this big, chewy, 75% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre, 10% Cinsault, and 5% Syrah blend. It was aged in neutral wood foudres for 15-18 months. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 2/04

39 Domaine Du Vieux Telegraphe - Vintage - 2001
Chateauneuf-Du-Pape La Crau
The 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape La Crau is gorgeous, structured, impressive. Full-bodied and backward, with great depth, purity, and heady aromatics, this 20,000-case blend of 60% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, and 15% miscellaneous amounts of the other permitted varietals will easily rival the 1998. A deep ruby/purple-tinged color is accompanied by a sweet perfume of salty sea breezes, seaweed, melted licorice, kirsch liqueur, creme de cassis, and iodine ... a classic Vieux-Telegraphe aromatic display. Powerful as well as firmly structured, this is a wine to lay away for 4-5 years. It should prove to be uncommonly long-lived, lasting a minimum of two decades. It gets my nod as the greatest Vieux-Telegraphe since the 1998. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 2/04

40 Cuvee Du Vatican - Vintage - 2003
Chateauneuf-Du-Pape Reserve Sixtine
An absolutely classic and brilliant example of the vintage and of Cuvee du Vatican is the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Sixtine. This wine was fabulous prior to bottling and continues to exhibit a terrific character post-bottling. About 2,000 cases were produced from yields that averaged 17 to 25 hectoliters per hectare. Tipping the scales at 15.7% alcohol, it possesses an inky/purple color as well as a big, sweet nose of smoky plums and black currants intermixed with licorice, garrigue, underbrush, and scorched earth. Full-bodied, powerful, concentrated, meaty notes come across like steak au poivre. Dense, chewy, opulent, but structured, this massive wine has beautiful definition and length as well as impressive freshness and delineation. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 2/06

53 Hermann Donnhoff - Vintage - 2003
Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Auslese
Tarragon, oregano, stones, and pears can be detected in the nuanced scents of the spectacular 2003 Riesling Auslese Niederhauser Hermannshohle. Like the Dellchen, this offering blew me away with its juxtaposition of immense richness and elegant detail. Medium-bodied and satin-textured, it reveals an ample character awash in spices, herbs, poached pears, and super-ripe apples. Notes of red currants, slate, and candied minerals intermingled with linden blossoms can also be discerned in its complex flavor profile. While the Dellchen may have been a tad longer, this wine’s lush, tremendous finish appears to last over a minute. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 12/04

Tirant Priorat
A prodigious effort, the 2001 Tirant is a 9,000-bottle cuvee made from 30% Grenache (90-100 years old), 25% Carignan (90-100 years old), 25% young vine Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah, and 10% Merlot. Fermented in large oak foudres and aged 12 months in new French oak, it will be bottled with neither fining nor filtration. Inky/purple-colored to the rim, it boasts a spectacular bouquet of blueberries, blackberries, and the region’s classic crushed stone minerality. This full-throttle yet remarkably elegant 2001 possesses tremendous intensity and texture as well as layers of flavor, but comes across as not over the top, overripe, or overly heavy. The 60-second finish reveals more noticeable tannin than the other cuvees. Give it 1-2 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 10-15. The 2001 Tirant is indeed a special wine. Shiraz Run Rig
The 2002 Run Rig (97% Shiraz and 3% Viognier aged in 100% new French oak) represents the essence of old vine Barossa fruit. Extraordinarily opulent and rich, but playing it closer to the vest than the 2001, it gets my nod as one of the most remarkable wines made in either the Southern or Northern Hemisphere. An inky/purple color is accompanied by a sumptuous bouquet of apricots, honeysuckle, black raspberries, blackberries, licorice, and a hint of roasted meats. The wood has been soaked up by the wine’s extraordinary concentration. Fashioned from four sectors of Barossa (Maranaga, Koonunga Hill, Moppa, and Greenock), it spent 30 months in primarily new oak, and was bottled without fining or filtration. Indigenous yeast fermentations give these wines a wild mountain flower-styled bouquet with blueberry liqueur and cassis notes in the background. Full-bodied, unctuously-textured, thick, and juicy, it should be drunk over the next 4-6 years. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 2/05

100 Dominus - Vintage - 2002
Proprietary Red Wine
Dominus is a large vineyard, and they have the ability to make a strict selection. The 2002 Dominus gets my nod as the greatest example of this cuvee since the 1991 and 1994. There are 4,500 cases of this 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot, and 3% Merlot blend fashioned from minuscule yields ranging from 1.8 to 2.8 tons of fruit per acre. Christian Moueix told me that the phenolic material was higher analytically in 2002, as were the acids, which surprised everyone. The deep, saturated purple-colored 2002 boasts an extraordinary perfume of roasted coffee intermixed with black currants, cherries, cocoa, cedar, cigar smoke, and new saddle leather. A classic, full-bodied palate possesses great structure, tremendous depth, loads of tannin, and a multilayered, concentrated yet elegant finish. It is difficult to predict when this beauty will plateau in terms of maturity. My best guess is it needs 3-5 years of bottle age, and should last for 25 years. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 2/05

101 Ojai - Vintage - 2002
Syrah Thompson Vineyard
Lovers of Syrah’s beef blood character should check out the 2002 Syrah Thompson Vineyard. Aromas of creme de cassis, melted licorice, barbeque spices, roasted meat juices, and subtle herbs soar from the glass of this dense, full-bodied, multidimensional Syrah. Rich with low acidity, beautifully balanced and pure (characteristics of all the Ojai offerings), it can be drunk young or cellared for 10-15 years. One cannot say enough about the commitment to excellence exhibited year after year by Adam Tolmach. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 8/04

The full-bodied, classically-styled, Bordeaux-like 2002 La Joie’s (64.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28.5% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and .3% Malbec) deep ruby/purple color is followed by gorgeous aromas of black truffles, scorched earth, tobacco leaves, blackberry and cassis liqueur, and notions of minerals as well as acacia flowers. This stunning red can be drunk in 2-3 years, or cellared for two decades. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 2/05

104 Dominus - Vintage - 2003
Proprietary Red Wine
The 2003 Dominus has turned out even better than I thought from barrel. There are 4,800 cases of this 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot blend. A big, sweet nose of roasted coffee, Provencal herbs, black currants, cherry jam, plums, allspice, and forest floor is followed by a spicy, rich, full-bodied, fragrant, intense wine. The tannins are sweet, but noticeable in this beautifully complex, strikingly aromatic 2003. It has much more similarity to a great Bordeaux than anything from Napa Valley. Chateau Lafite-Rothschild - Vintage - 1998
In a less than perfect Medoc vintage, it has been spectacular since birth, putting on more weight and flesh over the last year. This opaque purple-colored 1998 is close to perfection. The spectacular nose of lead pencil, smoky, mineral, and black currant fruit soars majestically from the glass. The wine is elegant yet profoundly rich, revealing the essence of Lafite's character. The tannin is sweet, and the wine is spectacularly layered yet never heavy. The finish is sweet, super-rich, yet impeccably balanced and long (50+ seconds). Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 4/01

111 Chateau Mouton-Rothschild - Vintage - 1998
Like many of its peers, the 1998 has filled out spectacularly. Now in the bottle, this opaque black/purple-colored offering has increased in stature, richness, and size. A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc (57% of the production was utilized), it is an extremely powerful, super-concentrated wine offering notes of roasted espresso, creme de cassis, smoke, new saddle leather, graphite, and licorice. It is massive, with awesome concentration, mouth-searing tannin levels, and a saturated flavor profile that grips the mouth with considerable intensity. This is a 50-year Mouton, but patience will be required as it will not be close to drinkability for at least a decade. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 4/01

Chateau Clos De L’Oratoire - Vintage - 2000
The vinification is classic Stephan von Neipperg and Stephane Derenoncourt. Undoubtedly the finest effort this property has yet produced, the black-colored 2000 offers up sexy notes of espresso, chocolate, Asian spices, black cherry liqueur, and blackberries. Opulent, chewy, and powerful, this deep, full-bodied wine has layers of ripe fruit, huge power, yet a classic, well-delineated style. A brilliant wine. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 4/03

117 Chateau Gruaud-Larose - Vintage - 2000
This saturated bluish-black/purple-colored wine seems at first closed and broodingly backward. In the mouth, it is dense, textured, full-bodied, pure, yet, at the same time, closed. This wine is large-sized, with high tannin but equally high extract and richness. The wine will require patience, and seems to me to be the best effort Gruaud Larose has put forth since their sumptuous 1990. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 4/03

118 Chateau Haut-Brion - Vintage - 2000
...like a great diplomat, it is a wine of intensity, authority, and measured restraint. A supremely elegant offering, its dense ruby/purple color, and burgeoning perfume of scorched earth, liquid minerals, plums, black currants, cherries, lead pencil, and subtle spicy oak are followed by a delicate yet powerfully flavorful, multi-layered, highly nuanced, and extraordinarily pure and seamless wine. There have been so many recent classics from Haut-Brion, it is premature to suggest the 2000 is better than the 1998, 1995, 1990, or 1989, but it is certainly a prodigious wine of dazzling persistence, length, and complexity. 119 Chateau Leoville-Poyferre - Vintage - 2000
Wow, this wine has really come on strong. A brilliant effort, it boasts an opaque purple color in addition to a gorgeously sweet nose (make that explosive nose) of blackberries and creme de cassis intermixed with minerals, smoke, and earth. The 2000 is opulent, full-bodied, and much more accessible than either of its two Leoville siblings, Leoville Las Cases or Leoville Barton, with low acidity, sweet tannin, and a layered, sumptuous finish. It continues to improve dramatically and looks to be a great success, rivaling the brilliant 1996 and 1990. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 4/03

121 Chateau Monbousquet - Vintage - 2000
From an unheralded terroir, this Monbousquet was made from extremely low yields of 28-30 hectoliters per hectare. Aged sur lie and bottled unfined and unfiltered, it exemplifies proprietor Perse's enormous efforts. Black and blue to the rim, this wine represents the essence of this terroir. Its saturated black/purple color is accompanied by extraordinary aromatics of sweet blackberries, chocolate, coffee, incense, new saddle leather, and vanilla. Remarkable intensity, lively acidity, and abundant tannin provide definition and grip. This is the most intense, muscular, and biggest Monbousquet made to date, and that is saying something considering the 1998 and 1999! So be prepared, it is remarkable wine. 123 Chateau Pavie - Vintage - 2000
Give Gerard Perse credit. People thought his numerous assurances that 2000 was the greatest Pavie ever produced were premature as well as arrogant. However, after tasting this extraordinary blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon (made from low yields of 28-30 hectoliters per hectare) six separate times in 2003, it is unquestionably one of the most monumental wines Bordeaux has ever produced. Bottled in March, 2003, about nine months later than other 2000s, the color is an opaque purple, and the bouquet offers up notes of liquid minerals, blackberries, cherries, and cassis intermixed with spice box, cedar, and white flowers. On the palate, it exhibits a massive display of richness and extract, yet with pinpoint delineation and vibrancy as well as a 60+ second finish, this is the kind of phenomenal wine that Perse's critics were afraid he might produce - a no-compromise, immortal wonder that represents the essence of one of Bordeaux's greatest terroirs. Life is too short not to own and consume the 2000 Pavie. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 4/03

124 Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron - Vintage - 2000
A spectacular effort, this is a profound Pichon Baron and clearly my favorite vintage of this wine since the 1989 and 1990. An inky purple color offers up notes of barbecue spices intermixed with new saddle leather, creme de cassis, melted licorice, creosote, and a hint of vanilla. The wine is full-bodied, tremendously concentrated, with sweet tannin and a seamless finish that goes on for close to one minute. This wine has great purity, tremendous texture, and fabulous upside potential. This is a prodigious 2000! Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 4/03

125 Chateau Le Pin - Vintage - 2000
Exotic, opulent, extravagant, and impossible to resist, the 2000 Le Pin is an explosive, virtually perfect example of this estate. Dense purple-colored, with luxurious levels of extract and richness, this intense, unctuously-textured, black fruit-filled Pomerol is thick enough to drink with a spoon. Revealing abundant tannin and definition for such a young Le Pin, it is typical of many of the blockbuster, but backward and tannic 2000 Pomerols. It is a great wine for multi-millionaires who are able to latch onto a few bottles. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 4/03

The impressively saturated opaque purple color offers up some promising aromas of black currants, vanilla, truffle, smoke, and mineral. In the mouth, it is full-bodied, powerful, layered, and enticingly textured, but oh, so backward and firm. 129 Chateau Le Bon Pasteur - Vintage - 2001
A terrific success from the well-known estate of Bordeaux’s famed oenologists Dany and Michel Rolland, the 2001 Bon Pasteur is a super effort for the vintage. Deep plum/purple to the rim, with a sumptuous nose of barbecue spices, smoke, black cherries, mocha, and spice box, this opulent, medium to full-bodied, rich red reveals amazing extract and intensity for a wine from this vintage. 130 Chateau Calon-Segur - Vintage - 2001
I suspect this 2001 will shut down (as most young Calon-Segurs do), although it appears more forward and evolved than the huge, backward, but totally dormant 2000. The plum/ruby-colored 2001 reveals aromas of damp earth, cranberries, cherries, herbs, and forest floor. While lighter than its older sibling, it is medium-bodied, elegant, and should emerge from its post-bottling sleep in 4-5 years, and drink well for 14-15. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 6/04

132 Chateau Lascombes - Vintage - 2001
The 2000 was the finest Lascombes produced in over three decades, and the 2001 continues the great success this estate is enjoying under the guidance of Yves Vatelot (of Chateau Reignac) and Dr. Alain Raynaud (Chateau Quinault l’Enclos). A blend of 55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petit Verdot, it spent 18 months in cask (4 on its lees), and was bottled unfiltered. A dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by ripe aromas of spring flowers, blueberries, blackberries, and cassis. Medium-bodied, stylish, and elegant, with sweet tannin, impressive concentration, tremendous persistence as well as flavor intensity, and a 40+ second finish, this noble claret should be at its finest between 2005-2016. 133 Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion - Vintage - 2001
Like its more famous neighbor, Haut-Brion, the 2001 La Mission Haut-Brion has closed down considerably since bottling. A blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc, it possesses an inky/purple color (deeper than Haut-Brion’s) in addition to a tight but promising bouquet of scorched earth, wood, tar, black currants, and a hint of hickory wood. Medium-bodied, firm, muscular, and virile, it is a candidate for long term cellaring. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 6/04

136 Chateau Comtesse De Lalande Pichon-Longueville - Vintage - 2001
A distinctive bouquet of violets, soy, pepper, blackberries, cassis, and tree bark gives this 2001 a singular style. This dense ruby/purple-colored blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and a whopping 14% Petit Verdot exhibits plenty of structure, wonderful sweetness, a closed style, but a rich, textured, persistent character. The unusually large percentage of Petit Verdot gives the wine more structure and less initial charm. This beauty needs some time in the cellar. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 6/04

148 Jean Louis Chave - Vintage - 2003
Hermitage
The perfect 2003 Hermitage has acquired extraordinary minerality as well as definition since I first tasted it 12 months earlier. Its inky/purple color is accompanied by glorious aromas of creme de cassis, black cherries, licorice, crushed rocks, and flowers. Prodigiously rich and full-bodied yet elegant and fresh, this is a tour de force in winemaking. There are no overripe, scorched, pruny, fig-like notes in this extraordinary Hermitage. It will be drinkable young, yet evolve for 35-40+ years. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 2/06

Grange
The 1997 Grange (a blend of 96% Shiraz and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon) looks to be a classic Grange, although slightly softer and more forward than the backward 1996. The saturated purple-colored 1997 offers a gorgeously sweet nose of blackberry liqueur, cherries, camphor, chocolate, plums, and mocha. The wine is opulently-textured, extremely soft, layered, and seductive, with Grange's tell-tale personality well-displayed, but in a seamless, seductive style. This is a superb Grange that can hold its own against the more heralded 1996. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 10/02

151 Amon-Ra - Vintage - 2005
Shiraz
The profound 2005 Shiraz Amon Ra is fashioned from a dry grown, 100- to 110 year-old vineyard, and spends 14 months in a combination of 100% new French and American barrels as well as 300-liter hogsheads. A saturated purple color is followed by scents of creme de cassis, incense, licorice, black raspberries, graphite, and sweet wood. It unfolds beautifully on the palate to reveal terrific richness, full-bodied power, great definition, and lovely elegance. This exquisite Shiraz is still young, but it possesses a degree of accessibility. It should age for two decades. It is a superb example of cutting edge winemaking being utilized on ancient Shiraz vines in the Barossa. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 10/06

152 Harlan Estate - Vintage - 2001
Proprietary Red Wine
Rivaling the 1994 and 1997, the 2001 Harlan Estate is a perfect wine for my palate. Tasted on four separate occasions, this offering, which spent 28 months in oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered, is an extraordinary effort that comes across as a hypothetical blend of Mouton-Rothschild, La Mission-Haut-Brion, and Montrose. A synthesis in style between the more elegant, delineated, structured 1994, and the port-like, over-the-top, viscous 1997, this extraordinary 2001 was the “wine of my trip,” even though I had already had it from bottle several months earlier. An inky/purple color is accompanied by a stupendous bouquet of lead pencil shavings interwoven with coffee, new saddle leather, melted licorice, cedarwood, black currant liqueur, and violets. Explosive richness, a marvelous, full-bodied texture, and fabulous purity, concentration, complexity, and nobleness are the stuff of legends. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 2/05

153 Harlan Estate - Vintage - 2003
Proprietary Red Wine
The bottled 2003 Harlan Estate is as good or even better than I had hoped. With a dark ruby/purple color, silky tannin, and abundant quantities of licorice, graphite, chocolate, espresso, black currant, truffle, and earthy characteristics, it comes across like a hypothetical blend of a top-notch Pauillac and Graves. Superb texture, low acidity, and gorgeous purity as well as richness suggest it will drink well for two decades or more. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 12/06

154 Screaming Eagle - Vintage - 2003
Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2003 has been in bottle for over a year and continues to be a beautiful wine, dense ruby/purple in color with wonderful purity of creme de cassis. It is that black currant liqueur purity, richness, and depth that is one of the shining characteristics of this wine. Extraordinarily pure, the wine is full-bodied, opulent, and concentrated, but still young and primary. There is plenty of tannin underlying the wealth of fruit and, if anything, the wine seems to have firmed up since I had it last year. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 12/06

Syrah Poker Face
A blockbuster in the making is the 2004 Poker Face (a 1,000-case blend of 95% Syrah and 5% Mourvedre and Viognier). The majority of the grapes are from the Eleven Confessions home vineyard and the rest from White Hawk, Alban, Bien Nacido, and Alta Mesa. An opaque purple color as well as an extraordinarily intense and projected set of aromatics (including smoke, blueberries, blackberries, cassis, and flowers) are found in this full-bodied, layered, rich, mouthfilling 2004. Neither heavy nor overwrought, this is another potentially perfect wine from a producer who continues to go from strength to strength, refusing to make any compromises on the long and less traveled road he has chosen. 193 Chateau Montrose - Vintage - 1995
An explosively rich, exotic, fruity Montrose, the 1995 displays even more fat and extract than the 1996. There is less Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1995 blend, resulting in a fuller-bodied, more accessible and friendlier style. The wine exhibits an opaque black/ruby/purple color, as well as a ripe nose of black fruits, vanillin, and licorice. Powerful yet surprisingly accessible (the tannin is velvety and the acidity low), this terrific example of Montrose should be drinkable at a young age. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 2/98

194 Chateau Haut-Brion - Vintage - 1999
Deep plum, currant, and mineral notes emerge from the concentrated, beautifully balanced, pure 1999 Haut Brion. It seems to be cut from the same mold as years such as 1979 and 1985. There is a hint of graphite in the abundant fruit. The wine is medium to full-bodied, nuanced, subtle, deep, and provocatively elegant. It is made in a style that only Haut Brion appears capable of achieving. The finish is extremely long, the tannins sweet, and the overall impression one of delicacy interwoven with power and ripeness. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 4/02

195 Chateau Mouton-Rothschild - Vintage - 1999
The beautiful 1999 Mouton Rothschild may be a modern day clone of their 1962 or 1985. Its saturated ruby/purple color is followed by sumptuous aromas of cedar wood, creme de cassis, wood smoke, coffee, and dried herbs. The wine is forward, lush, and full-bodied. It is already complex as well as succulent, fleshy, and long. Tannin in the finish suggests more nuances will emerge in 4-5 years. It is a complex, classic Mouton. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 4/02

197 Chateau Pavie - Vintage - 1999
The 1999 Pavie is a candidate for wine of the vintage. It boasts an opaque ruby/purple color in addition to gorgeous aromas of crushed minerals, smoke, licorice, cherry liqueur, and black currants. The wine is exceptionally pure and multilayered, with stunning texture and overall balance. The tannin level suggests 3-4 years of cellaring is warranted; it should age gracefully for 25+ years. If readers are wondering why Pavie has become so much better under the administration of Chantal and Gerard Perse, keep in mind that yields are one-third of what they were under the previous owners. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 4/02

199 Chateau Lafite-Rothschild - Vintage - 2001
The 2001 Lafite Rothschild’s deep, saturated plum/purple color is accompanied by lead pencil liqueur-like notes intermixed with sweet red and black currants, plums, and cedar. This blend of 86.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13.5% Merlot is a classic example of Lafite. Extremely elegant, medium-bodied, with intense concentration, richness, and sweet tannin, it appears to be on a rapid evolutionary track, at least in comparison to recent Lafite vintages that have been far more backward and powerful. The classy 2001 should be at its finest between 2007-2020. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 6/04

200 Pavillion Rouge - Vintage - 2001
Pavillon Rouge De Chateau Margaux
Excellent balance along with copious quantities of sweet black cherry and cassis fruit are found in the 2001 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux. Light to medium-bodied, with a style similar to its bigger sister, but neither the concentration nor length, it should be enjoyed over the next 7-8 years. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 6/04

201 Chateau D' Yquem - Vintage - 1990
An extraordinary effort, Yquem's 1990 is a rich and fabulously superb, sweet wine. This wine also possesses lots of elegance and finesse. The wine's medium gold color is accompanied by an exceptionally sweet nose of honeyed tropical fruits, peaches, coconut, and apricots. High quality, subtle toasty oak is well-integrated. The wine is massive on the palate, with layers of intensely ripe botrytis-tinged, exceptionally sweet fruit. Surprisingly well-integrated acidity, and a seamless, full-bodied power and richness have created a wine of remarkable harmony and purity. Certainly it is one of the richest Yquems I have ever tasted, with 50-100 years of potential longevity. An awesome Yquem! Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 4/99

202 Chateau La Lagune - Vintage - 1982
A beautifully made wine, the 1982 is my favorite La Lagune of the last 20 years... It can be drunk, given its sweet fragrance of toasty oak and ripe black-cherries and currants. However, it is exhibiting more tannin and structure than I would have imagined. It is a powerful, full-bodied La Lagune with super concentration and a thick, juicy personality. There are no signs of color degradation. The wine has some tannin to shed, so another 1-2 years of cellaring would be beneficial, particularly where the wine has been stored under ideal conditions. It is a classic 1982 that appears to be a synthesis in style between a right bank Pomerol and a more austere Medoc. Complex and rich, as well as more structured than I initially believed, this wine should achieve full maturity by the end of the decade, and last through the first two decades of the next century. 203 Chateau Leoville-Barton - Vintage - 1982
One of the most traditionally-styled wines of the vintage, this wine is a throw-back to the old, rough and tumble style of Bordeaux, with high tannin, huge extract, and an impenetrable personality. The wine has not budged in evolution since bottling. The color remains a murky, opaque purple/garnet. The nose offers up aromas of cedar, licorice, spices, black truffles, and sweet, ripe fruit. Very unformed and unevolved, this full-bodied, tannic, intensely concentrated wine is thick and rich, but oh, so backward. In many respects this is a classic St.-Julien meant to be held for another 10-20 years before consumption. It should prove to be one of the great Leoville-Barton's, but it has more in common with a 1975 in terms of its glacial pace of development than with most 1982s. 204 Chateau L' Angelus - Vintage - 1989
This chateau has been turning out such spectacular wines that it is not surprising it was elevated in the recent reclassification of St.-Emilion. Any Bordeaux lover would be thrilled to have either of the 1989 or 1990 in his or her cellar. Both wines reveal an opaque purple color, with the 1990 slightly more inky. Both wines are also exceptionally endowed, backward, rich, full-bodied, and crammed with fruit. The 1989 possesses a huge finish, with more noticeable tannin than in the 1990. Picking a favorite between these two fabulous examples of their respective vintages is - for me - presently impossible. I will probably end up drinking the 1990 before the 1989, but both wines are 25-30-year wines, with the 1989 possibly reaching full maturity in 5-6 years, and the 1990 needing several more years of cellaring. 205 Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron - Vintage - 1989
The dense, full-bodied 1989 is brilliantly made with huge, smoky, chocolatey, cassis aromas intermingled with scents of toasty oak. Well-layered, with a sweet inner-core of fruit, this awesomely endowed, backward, tannic, prodigious 1989 needs another 5-6 years of cellaring; it should last for three decades or more. It is unquestionably a great Pichon-Longueville-Baron. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 2/97

206 Chateau Lagrange - Vintage - 1990
This muscular, thick, unctuous, lavishly-oaked wine may cause raised eyebrows by those looking for something restrained and understated. There is no doubting the hedonistic appeal of this style of wine. The 1990 is another massive, highly-extracted, boldly-wooded, spicy, dark purple-colored wine with high tannin, low acidity, and layers of jammy fruit. The huge glycerin and massive mouthfeel in this unctuously-textured wine are difficult to ignore. I suspect this wine will become more defined after it loses its baby fat. Although fun to taste at present, it does need 3-4 more years of cellaring; it should last for 20-25 years. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 2/97

207 Chateau Rausan-Segla - Vintage - 1990
I hope I am not too optimistic about the potential of the 1990 Rausan-Segla as it is one wine that requires a significant investment in patience. It reveals an opaque purple color, but the wine is broodingly backward, with a formidable tannin level. Closer examination, however, reveals large quantities of sweet, earthy, cassis fruit, full body, and a leathery toughness. The wine is pure, with huge flavor extraction, as well as mouthsearing tannin. In previous tastings it displayed more openness and less aggressiveness. All the component parts appear to be present, but this massive wine has gone into a dormant state. Give it 7-8 more years of bottle age; it may be a 30-year wine. 208 Chateau Haut-Brion - Vintage - 1994
I continue to find similarities between Haut-Brion's flattering, elegant, rich, powerful 1985 and the estate's gorgeous 1994. The latter wine possesses outstanding color saturation, as well as an open-knit, forward nose of smoky, sweet, red and blackcurrant fruit intermixed with minerals and vanillin. Medium to full-bodied, with layers of flavor, this superb wine is a great example of just what intensity and elegance administrator Jean Delmas is able to pack into this wine without it tasting aggressively oaky, overblown, or too heavy. In many respects, this is the most aromatically complex and best-balanced of all the Bordeaux first-growths. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 4/96

Chablis Les Clos
Aromatically demure, the 2000 Chablis Les Clos reveals hints of flinty scents. Lovers of great Chablis will have to be patient with this wine as it is typically (for Les Clos) restrained in its youth. Its deep, concentrated personality displays great concentration, richness, and length. With aeration, notes of crystalline minerals, quartz, earth, resiny minerals, and crisp pears come to the fore. 227 Marcassin - Vintage - 2003
Chardonnay Marcassin Vineyard
The flagship wine, aged in 100% new French oak, is the 2003 Chardonnay Marcassin Estate. It came across as a California Corton-Charlemagne look-alike, with aromas of white fruits intermixed with brioche, hazelnut, liquified rocks, and a touch of gun flint. The wine has glorious richness, crisp underlying acidity, some hints of orange blossom, great structure, and a soaring, long finish of close to a minute. This is a stunner that is about as compelling as any Chardonnay made in the world. It should drink well for up to a decadel. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 12/06

241 Ruffino - Vintage - 1990
Chianti Classico Riserva Ducale
...this wine exhibits the opulence and abundant richness of this great Tuscan vintage. A saturated plum/garnet color complements a sweet bouquet of cedar, roasted herbs, smoked meats, and jammy, black-cherry fruit. This full-bodied, spicy, concentrated wine possesses muscle, power, and moderate tannin. It will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring and easily last for 20+ years. It appears to be one of the best Riserva Ducales Ruffino has produced. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 8/94

El Nido - Vintage - 2003
El Nido
The inky purple 2003 El Nido, which comes from 26-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon vines (70%) and 61-year-old Mourvedre (30%), was aged 26 months in new French and American oak barrels. It exhibits leathery, creme de cassis, and pain grille characteristics, additional tannin and body, and a formidable palate. A wine of extraordinary extract and richness, it will be a target for old timers and reactionaries who will feel it is too internationally styled, but it is an eye-opening wine from an area better known for large cooperatives and mediocre quality. It should evolve for 15 or more years. Well-known Australian winemaker, Chris Ringland, oversees the winemaking at this estate, fashioning intriguing reds with great depth as well as richness. These wines have broken all the parameters previously established by the backwater appellation of Jumilla. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 8/06

Shirvington - Vintage - 2002
Shiraz
The nearly perfect 2002 Shiraz is the stuff of legends. It is a 1,000 case cuvee that has been completely fermented and aged in 100% new American oak. An inky purple color is accompanied by a remarkable bouquet of white flowers intermixed with melted licorice, blackberries, currants, figs, and espresso roast. Extremely full-bodied, with extraordinary ripeness, opulence, and viscosity, yet very good acidity as well as excellent tannin providing up-lift and definition, this unforgettable wine can be drunk now or cellared for a decade or more. Bravo! Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 8/03

Cabernet Sauvignon
The elegance, purity, complexity, and striking beauty of the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is something to behold. This is a prodigious example of marrying the power and richness of Napa Cabernet with a sense of restraint, elegance, but tremendous, authoritative flavor intensity. As I said last year, if Chateau Margaux were making wine in Napa, this might be what it would taste like. An extraordinary nose of black currants, chocolate, sweet licorice, and a hint of toast jumps from the glass of this wine, which exhibits superb ripeness, an incredibly well-delineated, full-bodied, opulent palate, and good, uplifting acidity and freshness. This is a stunning tour de force in winemaking and ranks as the finest Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon I have ever tasted. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 12/05

247 Scarecrow - Vintage - 2003
Cabernet Sauvignon
Any debut wine that is this impressive requires research. The story goes as follows: In 1945, the famed John Daniel, Jr., who made so many historically great wines at Inglenook, convinced a neighbor of his, J. J. Cohn, to plant 80 acres of Cabernet vines, and the fruit became a component of Inglenook’s series of great Cabernet Sauvignons. Cohn, who owned the property and planted the vineyard at the insistence of John Daniel, had a prominent career in Hollywood as chief of production at MGM, where he played a role in the making of such movies as “Ben Hur,” “Mutiny on the Bounty,” and his favorite movie apparently, “The Wizard of Oz,” to which the Scarecrow label pays tribute. The 2003 Scarecrow (471 cases, all from the Rutherford area of Napa) was bottled unfined and unfiltered. The man behind this wine today is the grandson of J. J. Cohn, Bret Lopez, and his winemaker is Celia Masyczek, who first became well-known working at Staglin. Much of this blend still comes from the old dry-farmed Cabernet Sauvignon vines planted in 1945 by J. J. Cohn. This inky purple-colored wine has an extraordinary nose of sweet black cherry jam intermixed with licorice, spice box, and cedar. It has sensational richness, but the purity, elegance, and overall nuance of this wine are what set it apart and give it a very distinctive character all its own. This is a fabulous Cabernet Sauvignon and another terrific 2003 that can be drunk now or cellared for 15-20 or more years. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 12/06

Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill
...the 1986 Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill exhibits a deeper, darker ruby color, tough tannin, but much more of a mid-palate with sweet fruit, as well as fine glycerin giving it a nicely-textured, ripe, generous feel in the mouth. Although the tannin is high, the wine remains intact, with excellent fruit, medium to full body, and the potential to evolve for another 10-12 years. The tasting notes for this section are from two single blind tastings, one conducted in May, 1996, in C Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 8/31/92 Pages 27-34

IX Estate Proprietary Red Wine
The 2003 IX Proprietary Red Wine, a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and a dollop of Petit Verdot, demonstrates how fabulous the fruit from the estate vineyard can be. Beautiful scents of crushed rocks, spring flowers, licorice, charcoal, blackberries, and cassis are stunningly pure and complex. This opulent, intense, well-balanced, compelling, full-bodied wine appears to have softened considerably over the last year. It can be drunk now or cellared for 20-25 years. 279 Harlan Estate - Vintage - 2003
Proprietary Red Wine
With a dark ruby/purple color, silky tannin, and abundant quantities of licorice, graphite, chocolate, espresso, black currant, truffle, and earthy characteristics, it comes across like a hypothetical blend of a top-notch Pauillac and Graves. Superb texture, low acidity, and gorgeous purity as well as richness suggest it will drink well for two decades or more. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 12/06

280 Sine Qua Non - Vintage - 2004
Grenache Into The Dark
The 2004 Into the Dark (84% Grenache, 9% Mourvedre, and7% Syrah, nearly all from the Eleven Confessions vineyard) is a spectacular 500-case cuvee. It needs more time to fully emerge, but, ultimately, it should be as good if not better than its predecessors. A deep ruby/purple-tinged color is followed by a sumptuous, sweet perfume of candied black cherries, licorice, spice, and pepper. On the palate, the wine is fleshy, full-bodied, well-delineated, structured, powerful, and long. The amount of new oak utilized was decreased to 25%, and the 2004 was again aged in the larger 300 liter hogsheads. It should drink well for 10-15 years or longer. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 8/06

Pinot Noir Covert Fingers
The knockout, deep ruby/purple/plum 2004 Covert Fingers Pinot Noir exhibits a slightly restrained nose revealing sweet cranberry and cassis aromas interwoven with hints of flowers, charcoal, and oak, a savory, broad texture, and an opulent, voluptuous finish. This beauty should drink well for a decade or more. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 8/06

Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 8/06

The Rejuvenators
The 2004 The Rejuvenators, an intriguing blend of 56% Roussanne, 24% Viognier, and 20% Chardonnay primarily from the Alban Vineyard with small quantities emerging from the Krankl’s own Eleven Confessions Vineyard, exhibits a medium gold color along with a beautiful, honeyed, waxy bouquet of buttery citrus, oranges, and nectarines. Good acidity buttresses this full-bodied white with a superb tactile mouthfeel as well as stunning layers and length. This brilliant wine should age well for 4-5 years or longer. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 8/06

285 Guigal - Vintage - 1995
Cote Rotie Brune Et Blonde
The 1995 Cote Rotie Blonde et Brune is a classic wine for the appellation. Its dark garnet/ruby/purple color is followed by a jammy nose of pain grille, white flowers, black raspberries, olive, and pepper. Firmly structured with a rich, fleshy mid-section, and plenty of tannin in the finish, this gorgeously seductive Cote Rotie should be Marcel Guigal's finest Blonde et Brune since the 1991. Proprietary Red Wine
The 1997 Dominus, a blend of 86.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 4.5% Merlot, is showing fabulously well. With 14.1% alcohol and a pH that would make many New World oenologists shudder (about 3.95), this wine is a fleshy, silky-textured, opulent wine with a gorgeous nose of roasted herbs, coffee, jammy black cherry and plum-like fruit. 288 Chateau Latour - Vintage - 1995
I have been blown away by this wine on recent occasions, and all of my hopes for it being a prodigious example of Latour after bottling have proven to be correct. The wine is a more unctuously-textured, sweeter, more accessible Latour than the 1996. Wow! What a fabulous, profound wine this has turned out to be. It is unquestionably one of the great wines of the vintage, and will probably need 10-12 years of cellaring before it can be approached. The wine reveals an opaque purple color, and a knock-out nose of chocolate, walnuts, minerals, spice, and blackberry and cassis fruit. Exceptionally full-bodied, with exhilarating levels of glycerin, richness, and personality, this wine, despite its low acidity, possesses extremely high levels of tannin to go along with its equally gargantuan proportions of fruit. It is a fabulous Latour that should age effortlessly for 40-50 years. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 2/98

A refined Yquem blending wonderful finesse and terrific power. From a very good and famous vintage, this '47 is rich, ripe and sweet, yet more elegant than the '45. Offers caramel and tropical notes, racy botrytis-spiked acidity and a long, clean finish. Wine Spectator, 5/99

296 Cape D'Estaing - Vintage - 2001
Cabernet Sauvignon Kangaroo Island
The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon (100% Cabernet from six-year old vines) exhibits an opaque dark ruby/purple color as well as classic aromas of cedar wood interspersed with creme de cassis. Full-bodied and linear, with outstanding structure, texture, and overall purity, it is young and primary, tasting more like a just-bottled barrel sample than a finished wine. Nevertheless, it oozes with character, depth, and persistence. Patience will be required. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 8/03
