Robert Parker 99 The 2006 Shiraz 'The Velvet Glove' has an awesome nose bordering on ethereal. Aromas of smoke, violets, grilled meat, game, saddle leather, blueberry and chocolate leap from the glass. This full-bodied wine is packed and dense, layered with ripe black fruits, has superb delineation, great focus, and a super-long finish. It is still tightly wound and will benefit from a decade in the cellar. This hedonistic behemoth will drink well through 2040. It presents a brooding bouquet of violet/lavender, garrigue notes, espresso, blueberry, blackberry liqueur, and chocolate. Voluptuous and sexy on the palate, this totally hedonistic effort has plenty of structure and a 60 second finish. It will be difficult to keep one's hands off this beauty but it will drink well through 2027 for those who can withstand the seduction. Mollydooker is the label of the renowned winemaking team of Sparky and Sarah Marquis. This is their third vintage, one seriously affected by the drought conditions in Barossa and McLaren Vale. Their overall production was down by 50% in 2007. Mollydooker is divided into four tiers beginning with the Lefty Series, line-priced at $25. Next up the ladder is the Party Series priced at $55, followed by two wines comprising the Love Series priced at $80. Very deep garnet purple colored, it gives intense warm blackberry, choco-mint, smoked bacon and marmite-toast aromas with nuances of coffee, roasted nuts and vanilla. Floral notes of violets and potpourri emerge after a few minutes. Very rich, very crisp, concentrated and full, there�s a good backbone of firm, very fine tannins and crisp acid leading into the very long and layered finish. This is a very well balanced, structured wine that should begin to open-out with 2-3 years in bottle, drinking 2014 to 2024 . Following a challenging 2008 vintage when no Velvet Glove, Gigglepot, Blue Eyed Boy, Enchanted Path or Carnival of Love wines were made, Sparky Marquis and his inimitable Mollydooker line-up is back to firing on all cylinders in 2009.
