The dark garnet/plum-colored 1997 Merlot Reserve (87% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Malbec that spent three years in 100% new oak) reveals a dense, chewy, thick, viscous personality as well as enormously concentrated, black cherry, chocolate, vanilla, and berry fruit aromas and flavors. This powerful, full-bodied, spectacular Merlot still has some tannin to shed. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2020. - RP
