The original
vines of which a few still produce red wine were planted in 1890s. This
block was the classic mixed-black field blend, a very common vineyard
planting technique of the times. Interplanted were Zinfandel, Carignane,
Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouchet and Grand Noir, and several other varieties
that were picked together and vinified into deep dark red table wine.
Today, husband and wife proprietors John Gantner and Nancy Walker live
on this small property focusing their combined efforts in the production
of small amounts of estate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and the Mescolanza
(Spanish for medley or harmony), which remains a unique blend of Zinfandel,
Petite Sirah, and Carignane.
This intense,
concentrated wine is spicy and lush but with nice juicy acidity that
keeps it from being overly jammy. With BBQ weather right around
the corner, add this to your shopping list and enjoy with pork ribs
or a rack of lamb.
