Pouilly Fume and Sancerre, made from Sauvignon Blanc, have
always been the stars of the Loire, but as their popularity increased so did
the price. A nice replacement at a more modest price is this crisp and racy
Sauvignon Blanc, (with a little Chardonnay in the blend) from the appelation of
Cheverny in the Touraine region. Produced by the Delaille family on their 37
acres since 1930, this incredibly refreshing dry white is the perfect match
with any shellfish, grilled fish or chicken. It's also a nice starter with some
goat cheese, olives and crusty french bread. The wine is pale straw in the
glass with greenish highlights. The aromas are fresh and inviting with an
herbaceous overtone and ripe gooseberry fruit edged with citrusy
notes. The vivacious style of this wine is reminiscent of New Zealand
Sauvignon Blancs. On the palate the wine has a nice, creamy texture,
lively flavor and brisk, mouthwatering acidity. It's hard to put the glass down
once you get going.
