The historical origins of Castello Vicchiomaggio can be traced back
to the 5th century. In 1964, the Matta family purchased the Castello,
and set out to replant the Estate and create a cellar.
All winemaking techniques, from fermentation to ageing and bottling,
is supervised by John Matta, who is a trained oenologist.
Responsibility for the vines and olive groves is in the hands of
PierPaolo Brandani, whose father before him held the same position. The
philosophy at Vicchiomaggio is to produce wine in several styles, from
the very traditional to the innovative. Wines for different palates and
occasions. In order to achieve this, each part of the estate has been
carefully classified according to its soil type and the exposure of its
vineyards and each wine carries the name of the vineyard on its label.
The wines are of truly international quality and continue to win awards
world-wide.
The castle also has holiday apartments and farmhouses, all with
modern amenities that are open throughout the year and a restaurant
where typical Tuscan specialities can be enjoyed.
Grapes: 80% Sangiovese & 20% Cabernet Sauvignon from
the Ripa delle Mandorle vineyard
Note: The name means "Hill of the Almond Trees". The
Sangiovese is aged in large oak barrels of 25-75HL each whilst the
Cabernet is matured in French oak barriques. A very accessible Super
Tuscan with quite a lot of Cabernet although the Sangiovese still
predominates. The Cabernet portion of the blend suggests a potential
for ageing, but the wine is ready to drink when released.
Serve: At room temperature with roast and grilled meats
and full flavoured pasta dishes.
TASTING NOTES BY ROGER VOSS:
The bright, red colour and bouquet bursting with ripe fruit, red
fruits lead on to a wine that has concentration and acidity but also
forwardness, liveliness and freshness that demands to be drunk. A
seriously crafted wine, which is full of delight. |
