La Fiorita estate in Umbria was bought by Ferruccio Lamborghini (Yes, THAT Lamborghini!) in 1975 as a retirement project. Just about a third of the estate is planted to vineyards. The rest? Well, quite a bit was devoted to a 9 hole golf course. Ferruccio’s daughter, Patrizia, began managing the estate in the mid-1990’s. She replaced all white varietals with Sangiovese and Merlot and reduced the yield to concentrate flavors. This wine is a 50/50 blend of Sangiovese and Merlot. The two varietals are separately fermented and oak aged for 12 months. Once blended and bottled, the wine rests another 6 months. This smooth, elegant wine is beautifully balanced with plenty of juicy, ripe berry fruit on the palate and lengthy finish. |
