Stellenbosch, a coastal region near False Bay, is a prime red wine region within South Africa. Anwilka's vineyards were purchased in 1997 and the first vintage was 2005. The vineyards are managed to keep yields low (and flavors intense). Grapes are hand-picked and hand-sorted. Gravity flow and extended maceration are some of the many methods used to ensure gentle flavor extraction. This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (63%) and Syrah (37%) oak aged separately for 7 months, then blended and oak aged for another 2 months. ""A polished, modern style, with alluring layers of plum sauce, black forest cake, blueberry, graphite and mocha. The ripe, rounded finish builds nicely, showing latent depth and length."" Wine Spectator Rated 90. Robert Parker has not rated it, but deemed this debut release ""the finest red wine I've ever had from South Africa"" We love this wine and highly recommend decanting it for at least one hour. It is best savored with flavorful, hearty food. |
