| The 1997 Shiraz (200 cases for the United States) is an unfiltered, jammy blackberry-scented, unbelievably sexy wine that some would call a "Parker hedonistic fruit bomb." Pure, rich, and full-bodied, with considerable viscosity, purity, and length. The wine is a big, mouth-filling, highly-extracted example to drink over the next 10-12+ years. Made by a native of Sweden, Thor Soderstrom, the Shiraz comes from relatively old vines. I was told that the grapes from one plot of 40-year old vines used to be purchased by Penfolds to be incorporated into their Grange. In 1996, this winery hired Rolf Binder to oversee the wine making.--Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, April 1999.
Based upon 50-year old dry-grown and near-organic vineyards with a yield of only 1-1.5 tonnes per acre, Viking Wines has been 'discovered' by Robert Parker, with inevitable consequences for the price of its top Shiraz. There are 5 hectares of shiraz and 3 of cabernet sauvignon....The immensely experienced Rolf Binder is contract winemaker for this operation, which sells its wine through several retailers in Sydney and Melbourne, and exports to the U.S., Europe, and Japan.
