"De Waal’s pinotage is one of South Africa’s best, having five times received the Pinotage Top Ten Award in the seven years this competition has been conducted by the ABSA, as well as earning a coveted 4½ out of 5 stars from John Platter’s Guide to South African wines. The history of this property goes back to 1864 when the De Waal family purchased the Uiterwyk Wine Estate, an old Dutch homestead which was at one time the last outpost on the road from Cape Town to Stellenbosch. Nine generations of winemaking experience have given them both a respect for tradition as well as an eye to the future of the industry.

We love De Waal because unlike the pinotage of yesterday, theirs are full and round with forward, complex fruit, and are cleanly made, quaffable reds. In 2002, the winemaker, Daniël de Waal, received Diners Club Winemaker of the Year for this Pinotage.
